Why We Stopped Installing Reverse Osmosis

We used to install it. Here is why we stopped.

The short answer

Reverse osmosis sends two to four gallons down the drain for every gallon you drink, needs a drain saddle clamped onto your sink trap that is a common source of slow cabinet leaks, and strips the natural minerals out of the water so it tastes flat. Three stage direct-connect ultrafiltration wastes no water, needs no drain connection, and filters to 0.01 microns while leaving the minerals in.

We are not against reverse osmosis, we just stopped installing it

Reverse osmosis is genuinely effective and for a few specific water problems it is still the right answer. But for a normal Central Florida home on municipal water it brings a set of costs that most homeowners are never told about at the kitchen table, and once you have installed enough of them you stop being willing to keep doing it.

What the drain line actually costs you

A reverse osmosis membrane works by cross-flow, which means it continuously runs water across the membrane surface to keep it from fouling, and that water goes down the drain. A standard system sends between two and four gallons to waste for every gallon it gives you to drink. On a Florida water bill, over years, that is a real number, and it is running whether or not anyone is drinking.

The leak nobody notices

To send that water away, a reverse osmosis system needs a drain saddle clamped onto the trap arm under your sink, which puts a pressurized fitting on a thin waste line inside a closed cabinet. It is a common failure point, and the failure mode is not a burst, it is a slow weep that nobody sees until the cabinet floor swells.

Why the water tastes different

Reverse osmosis filters down to roughly 0.0001 microns, which is tight enough to strip out the dissolved calcium and magnesium that give water its taste along with everything else. That is why reverse osmosis water is often described as flat, and why the industry sells remineralization cartridges to put back what the membrane just took out.

What we install instead

A three stage direct-connect ultrafiltration system: a sediment filter, a carbon block, and a 0.01 micron hollow fiber membrane. It plumbs inline with the cold water line you already have, it has no drain connection and no separate faucet, every drop that enters it comes out of the tap, and it holds better than a gallon and a half a minute. It blocks bacteria, cysts and microplastics, and the minerals go through, so nothing needs adding back.

  • Reverse osmosis wastes two to four gallons for every gallon you drink
  • Ultrafiltration wastes none, because it is forward flow rather than cross flow
  • No drain saddle on the trap means one fewer thing to leak in the cabinet
  • Minerals stay in the water, so nothing has to be added back afterwards

Already have a quote?

If another company has already quoted you $5,000, $6,000, $7,000 or more, read this before you sign anything.

Most of that number never touches the equipment that ends up in your garage. Before you pay for a single piece of a water system you are paying four other people: the representative who drove out to your house, the commission he earns the moment you say yes, the setter who booked him the appointment, and the national advertising budget that put his company in front of you in the first place.

We do not employ a single one of them. All four of those costs came out of the business, and they came off your price. The system we install does the same job in the same house, it is made in America, and it runs on its own solar panel rather than on your power bill.

Read us the quote you were given. Our price is already on this page, so the call is not about our number. We will go through theirs with you and tell you how much of it is equipment, how much is commission and advertising, and what it will keep costing you after the installer leaves. It is a quick call, with no salesperson. If you’d prefer someone to come out first, we’ll arrange a visit.

The difference

Why ours runs on the sun

Every SolarPure™ system carries its own solar panel. That one design choice is why it costs nothing to run and why it goes places other systems cannot.

1

Its own solar panel

The panel ships with the system. Nothing to wire into the house, nothing shared with another circuit.

1 hr

Of daylight a day

That is all it takes to recharge the long life NiMH battery backup that holds your settings.

$0

On your power bill

It adds nothing to what you pay the utility, and it installs where there is no outlet.

What is in the tank

Four media beds and four fail-safes

These are the same media a water treatment professional would specify to build this properly.

Catalytic activated carbon, the stage 1 media inside a SolarPure system
Stage 1

Catalytic activated carbon

Catalytic carbon filters out the chemical chlorine and chloramine the city adds, clearing up the bad taste and smell that come with them.

Ion exchange resin, the stage 2 media inside a SolarPure system
Stage 2

Ion exchange resin

Ion exchange resin pulls out the hard minerals that leave white crust on your faucets and shower glass, and that wear out your water heater.

KDF, the stage 3 media inside a SolarPure system
Stage 3

KDF

KDF helps reduce heavy metals and the iron some older city distribution mains can contribute, the kind that shows up as orange staining, and helps keep bacteria from growing inside the tank.

Garnet gravel, the stage 4 media inside a SolarPure system
Stage 4

Garnet gravel

Garnet gravel sits at the bottom and keeps water moving freely through the tank, helping hold your water pressure where you are used to it.

Build and fail-safes
Self-cleaning control valve
Cleans itself for maximum performance and long service life. High flow rates keep pressure up when more than one fixture is running.
Automatic bypass during regeneration
The system steps aside while it regenerates, so the house never loses water mid-cycle.
Tank-within-a-tank construction
Fail-safe by design rather than by warranty claim.
Brine float overflow protection
A float shuts the brine tank down before it can overflow onto the floor.
Solar panel and NiMH battery backup
One hour of daylight a day keeps the battery charged and the program settings held.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

Is ultrafiltration as good as reverse osmosis?

For a home on municipal water, it does the job you actually need doing. Ultrafiltration blocks bacteria, viruses, parasites, cysts and microplastics at 0.01 microns, and the carbon block ahead of it handles chlorine, chloramine, volatile organic compounds and lead. Reverse osmosis goes further on dissolved solids, which matters for a few specific problems and costs you water, a drain connection and the taste for the rest.

Do I need a remineralization filter?

Not with ultrafiltration. Remineralization cartridges exist because reverse osmosis strips the minerals out. Ultrafiltration leaves the calcium and magnesium where they are, and adding minerals on top of water that already has them can oversaturate it and leave white scale in a kettle.

Will it fit under my sink?

Yes. It plumbs inline with the existing cold water line using push-to-connect hoses, it needs no drain connection and no hole drilled for a separate faucet, and the cartridges are twist out and twist in.

Do you still install reverse osmosis if I ask for it?

Ask us on the phone. We will tell you honestly whether your situation is one of the few where it is the better answer.

What does a SolarPure system cost?

SolarPure Whole Home is $3,295 installed and SolarPure Complete, which adds three stage ultrafiltration drinking water at the kitchen sink, is $3,995 installed. Both are installed prices rather than starting points.

Does somebody have to come to my house before I get a price?

No. A quick phone call is all it takes. If you’d prefer someone to come out first, we’ll arrange a visit. Nobody comes to sell you anything.

Does SolarPure use salt?

Yes. SolarPure uses salt as part of the softening process, because hardness minerals have to be removed, not wished away. The difference is in the system design, sizing, media, setup and support. The goal is better Florida city water, less scale, less chlorine impact, and a system built around the conditions found in Florida homes.

Are store bought water systems really cheaper?

Sometimes the equipment looks cheaper upfront, but the shelf price is not the installed price. Installation, materials, upgrades, financing, service limitations and extra retail program layers can raise the real cost. The better comparison is total installed value, local water fit and long term support, not just the price on the box.

I already have a quote from another company, so can you tell me whether it is fair?

Yes, and it is a quick call. Read us what you were quoted and what they proposed to install, and we will tell you plainly what that number is actually paying for, side by side with our published price.
